Get Moving!
The benefits of exercising regularly are countless. Exercise improves our sleep, mood and memory. It also builds muscle, prevents chronic diseases and helps us to live longer. These are all things we want! So why aren’t we exercising more often? Life and excuses tend to get in the way. Too busy, too tired and feeling pressed for time. Staying active doesn’t have to be a strict routine! Just by trying to do more than what you are doing already is a great start. Simple strategies for increasing your daily steps include parking the car farther away, taking the stairs, getting up for walking breaks at work or going for a stroll after dinner. Here are some tips for sticking with an exercise routine:
1) Find an activity that you enjoy. Trial different fitness classes and/or equipment to get an idea of what you can see yourself doing consistently.
2) Pick a time of the day to exercise that best fits your personality and schedule. Do not aim to hit the gym at the crack of dawn, if you can’t get out of bed before 9 a.m. This is a set up for failure!
3) Be prepared. Pack a bag and head to the gym straight from work. Avoid stopping home to change. You may not be able to resist the couch! Planning to workout in the morning? Lay your clothes and sneakers out by the bed and set the coffee pot up the night before. Get up and go!
4) Make yourself accountable. Tell your friends and family about your fitness goals. You would not want to let them down by quitting or skipping workouts!
